Ian is Senior Lecturer within the Cultural Business Group and Associate Director of the Caledonian Heritage
Futures Network, responsible for knowledge transfer activities. He holds a MA(Hons)
1st class in Archaeology from the University of Edinburgh, and undertook a PhD
in Heritage Management at the University of Cambridge (Sidney Sussex
College/Dept. Archaeology), supervised by Dr Kate Pretty (Pro-Vice Chancellor).
Previous experience includes: being in charge of Student
Services for Lucy Cavendish College (Cambridge University); Monuments at Risk
Surveyor for Bournemouth University; Hands-On helper for
the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh; and historic property custodian at Battle Abbey
and the Battlefield of Hastings for English Heritage.

Knowledge Transfer & Civic Engagement Activity
Historic Environment Audit: Major ongoing involvement in Historic Environment
Reporting / Auditing with historic environment managing agencies. Original
involvement as author of "The Heritage Monitor" published by English Tourism
Council and English Heritage in 2001; then as leading consultant for pilot "State of the
Historic Environment Report" published by English Heritage in 2002. Close
involvement in advocacy work and research data collation for equivalent process
in Scotland with Built Environment Forum Scotland (BEFS) and Historic Scotland
since then (as well as ongoing involvement in English "Heritage Counts" research
programme). Recently undertook the pre-audit Assessment of Data Quality on behalf of Historic Scotland for the Scotland's Historic Environment Audit [weblink].
External commitments: As part of the University's civic engagement mission, I am involved in a number of committees and professional advisory panels associated with historic environment management.

Academic Research
Current projects which are being worked on actively:
- Heritage & Hospitality: Collaborative project with Mrs Bernadette Scott (GCU) and Mr Kevin O'Gorman (Strathclyde University) triangulating archaeological, historical, and sociological perspectives on notions of hospitality in past societies.
- Managing Stonehenge: long term research
collaboration with Dr Christopher Chippindale (Reader in British Archaeology,
Cambridge University Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology) with book planning in
progress. Analysing Stonehenge considering its historical role as a heritage
site, and the current position of the site within differing stakeholder visions and management scenarios.
- Scottish Historic Environment Policy Review :
major case study being prepared for publication, considering the divergence in
policy development for heritage and the historic environment in Scotland since
devolution.
- Trails: undertaking background research on
the form and content of heritage trails for proposed research collaboration and
grant application with Terry Levinthal (Director of Scottish Civic Trust).
