An insight into the kind of projects Heritage Futures undertakes can be seen in the summaries below.

Heritage Values & Historic Environment Reporting / Auditing

The Historic Environment Reporting Project (Scotland) built on work undertaken for the UK government’s conservation advisors in England, English Heritage, to develop the pilot ‘State of the Historic Environment Report’ (SHER) in 2002.  This has since been rolled out as an annual programme called "Heritage Counts".

The team has supported calls from the heritage sector in Scotland for a similar heritage audit, and has contributed substantial expertise to advocacy work by the Built Environment Forum Scotland and others.  The project has achieved its primary aim of facilitating the heritage auditing process, and will now support the creation of an auditing programme by Historic Scotland.  It is beginning to grapple with historic environment ‘management information’ assessing the health of the built heritage in the country, and is considering the role of heritage management information providing the evidence base for establishment of heritage values in a variety of operational and conceptual contexts.

Local Community History

Heritage Futures began the first stage of a research project into local community history in Scotland during March 2004.

In association with the Scottish Local History Forum (SLHF), staff have designed two questionnaires - one aimed at groups and the other at individuals with an interest in history.

The purpose of the questionnaires is to begin to develop a range of support for Local History Groups - an area of the cultural heritage field that is particularly under represented and resourced. We want to find out what activities groups and individuals are undertaking and establish what they think are priorities for future development and sustainability of local histoy.

The first questionnaire has been sent to 101 groups that we know of around the country. If your group has not been contacted and you wish to have your voice heard please contact us by email on heritagefutures@gcal.ac.uk or phone 0141 331 8290.

The second questionnaire, aimed at individuals, is to be sent out during April. This questionnaire is to be sent to each member of SLHF. If you are not a member of SHLF but would like to be involved in our project please do contact us, details listed below.

We will publish the results of the questionnaires online over the coming months.
